Lab-Tested Protein Reviews, Scored Without Spin

Every tub on this page went through the same four-axis protocol: protein content verified against label claims, mixability timed in shaker and blender, taste tested across two weeks of daily use, and value calculated per gram of usable protein. No sponsorships, no affiliate placement bias — just the receipts.

The Tubs That Made the Bench This Month

Five protein products, five different use cases — from post-workout recovery to overnight anti-catabolic feeding. Each was tested the same way, scored the same way, and paid for at full retail price.

Micellar · Premium

OptiGold Micellar Reserve

The cleanest amino profile we have seen from a mid-tier casein. 24g protein, 0.8g fat, mixes in 18 seconds. Chocolate peanut butter was the standout, though the vanilla did tend toward artificial after the third night.

Casein Blend · Value

BulkFuel 80 Casein Blend

A micellar + calcium casein hybrid that delivers 23g of protein at $0.41 per serving. Texture is thicker than single-source products, which is actually a plus before bed. The one ding: slight stevia aftertaste in the salted caramel.

Hydrolysate · Recovery

HydroPro Pre-Bed Formula

Hydrolyzed casein for faster uptake, marketed for lifters cutting calories. 26g protein per scoop, near-zero lactose. Mixability is the best of the round at 11 seconds. Taste is functional rather than exciting — the unflavored version is the one to buy.

Grass-Fed · Clean

PastureCasein Grass-Fed Whey-Casein Stack

Two-phase protein using grass-fed micellar casein and whey concentrate. 27g total protein, third-party tested by Informed Choice. Mixes well but the natural flavor is polarizing — you either love the earthy note or you do not.

Plant-Casein Hybrid

NovaPlant Casein+ Pea Fusion

An interesting hybrid: 60% micellar casein, 40% pea protein isolate, marketed for users who want slow release with a slightly faster amino front. 22g protein, smooth mouthfeel, but the value per gram drops because of the premium positioning.

Budget · Daily

CoreFuel Pure Casein

The workhorse option. 24g protein, simple ingredient panel, and the lowest price per gram on the bench. Mixability is the trade-off — 26 seconds in a shaker, with a slight grain in plain water. Undeniably the value play of the round.

How We Score

Four Axes, No Category Weighting

Every tub is scored across the same four axes, with equal weight. A high protein score cannot rescue poor mixability, and a great taste cannot excuse a misleading label. Here is exactly what we measure.

01

Protein Content

Verified through third-party lab analysis where possible. We cross-check label claims against certificate of analysis, deduct for protein spiking, and flag amino-spike loopholes. A 25g label that delivers 21.4g scores below a 22g label that delivers 22.1g.

02

Mixability

Timed in a standard shaker (12oz, 200ml water) and a countertop blender. We log dissolution time, foam volume, and the presence of any undissolved granules at 30 seconds. Cold water and warm water tested separately.

03

Taste

Blind taste panels of three reviewers, scored across a 14-day window. We track flavor decay, sweetness build, and any metallic or chemical notes that emerge after the third serving. Texture and mouthfeel weigh equally with flavor.

04

Value

Cost per gram of verified protein, not cost per gram of scoop weight. We adjust for the realistic number of servings per tub and penalize products that under-deliver on label. The cheapest tub is rarely the highest value score.
